Men's Mental Health Awareness Month

From a young age, we are told "man up" as if men are only supposed to be strong, resilient, and not capable of any other feelings. The pressure of masculinity often collides with the vulnerability of mental health. It is time to acknowledge the challenges men face in navigating their emotional well-being as well as dismantle the stigma that revolves around men and mental health. This month, we advocate for resources that empower men to prioritize their mental wellness.


We must start by breaking the stigma around men and mental health and fostering a culture of openness and support. Too often, societal norms dictate that men should remain stoic and unemotional, causing them to dismiss feelings of anxiety and depression as signs of weakness. That is not the case, we are all human beings who exhibit a range of emotions. Emotions are a universal human experience unaffected by gender norms. Similarly, mindfulness practices, such as meditation and deep breathing exercises, offer powerful tools for cultivating present-moment awareness and calming the mind amidst the chaos of daily life. Additionally, engaging in creative outlets—whether it's writing, painting, or playing music—provides an opportunity for self-expression and emotional processing. By embracing these healthy coping strategies, men can build resilience, enhance self-awareness, and foster a greater sense of balance and fulfillment in their lives.


For men struggling with mental health issues, it's crucial to know that support systems and resources are available to provide assistance and guidance. One valuable resource is the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), which offers a variety of programs and support groups tailored to men's mental health needs.
